01 What each check means

Camera

We ask the browser for your camera and show you the live picture, along with the actual resolution and frame rate it delivers. Apps sometimes claim HD while the camera negotiates something much lower. Below 640×480 or 15 fps, you'll look rough on the other side, so we flag it. We also look at the brightness of the picture itself: a black frame means a covered lens or privacy shutter, a very dark one means you need more light, and a blown-out one usually means a window behind you.

Microphone

The level meter listens for your voice. A working mic that nobody selected, a mic buried under a monitor, or an input gain set to near zero all look identical in a meeting app: silence. Here you see the meter move when you speak, which settles the question. If it passes here but people still can't hear you in a call, the problem is the meeting app's input selection or its mute state, not your hardware.

Background noise

While you stay quiet for a few seconds, we measure the noise floor your mic picks up: fans, traffic, a fridge, an air conditioner. We listen to the raw microphone signal (no noise suppression, no auto gain) and compare the floor against how loud your own voice was. If your voice sits 30 dB or more above the background, you're easy to understand; under 15 dB, the room is competing with you and it's worth closing a door.

Speaker

We play a short chime and ask whether you heard it. Sound routed to a sleeping Bluetooth headset or a muted output is the classic "I can't hear anyone" start of a call. Thirty seconds before the meeting is a better time to find out.

Network

Video calls care about three things: latency (how long a packet takes to travel), jitter (how much that varies), and bandwidth in both directions. Upload is the one people forget, and it's what carries your video and voice to everyone else. We measure all of them against what an HD group call realistically needs.

02 What we check against

These thresholds are based on what an HD group call needs in practice. Each vendor publishes its own minimums (and they change), but if you pass these, you're comfortably above all of them.

? Common questions

Is anything recorded or uploaded?

No. The camera preview and microphone meter run entirely in your browser and are shown to you and only you. Nothing is recorded, stored, or sent anywhere. The network test transfers random bytes that are thrown away on arrival.

Why does the speaker check ask me if I heard it?

A browser can play a sound, but it has no way to know whether it actually reached your ears. Audio can get lost in the wrong output device, a muted volume, or a Bluetooth headset that is connected but idle. You are the only reliable sensor for that, so we ask.

Does this work for Zoom, Teams, and Meet?

Yes. The test checks your actual devices and connection, not a specific app. If everything passes here, your hardware and network are ready for any call: Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Webex, or anything else.

The test says my mic works, but people still can't hear me. Why?

Then your hardware is fine and the problem is in the meeting app: the wrong input device selected, or you're muted inside the app. Check the app's audio settings first. This exact confusion is why we built MuteDeck: it shows your real mute state at all times.
